Street Light Pole Parts Name: every part explained from the top to the base plate
If you are comparing quotes or reading a drawing, you need the street light pole parts name first. Therefore, this guide names every part, shows where it sits on a labelled diagram and tells you what to ask your supplier about each one.
By Surya Traders, Govindpura Industrial Area, Bhopal. This is general guidance, so your engineer must confirm every detail for your project.
What are the parts of a street light pole?
Overall, the street light pole parts name list is shorter than most buyers expect. First, a pole has three zones: the top, the shaft and the base. Next, each zone has only a few named parts. In other words, once you know these names, a quotation or a drawing becomes easy to read.
However, different suppliers use different words for the same part. For example, one quotation says bracket, while another says outreach arm. Therefore, this guide lists the common alternative names too, so you can match them across quotes.
The three zones of a pole
Top zone
The luminaire, the bracket arm and, on some poles, a top cap or spigot.
Shaft zone
The shaft itself, the door opening, the cable entry and the earth stud.
Base zone
The base plate, the anchor bolts with nuts and washers, and the foundation.
Also, our street light pole range and tubular pole range use these same part names. The exact design still differs from model to model, so always confirm it on your drawing.
Street light pole parts name from top to bottom
Look at Drawing 1 first, because it numbers eight parts from the luminaire down to the foundation. Then use the list below the drawing as a quick key, because the same numbers appear again in Table 1.
- 1Luminaire (light fitting)
- 2Bracket arm (outreach arm)
- 3Shaft (tube, stem or column)
- 4Door and window opening
- 5Earth stud (shown red)
- 6Base plate
- 7Anchor bolts with nuts and washers
- 8Foundation below the ground line
Also, pole height and spacing change how the parts are sized and placed. Therefore, read our street light pole height and spacing guide before you finalise the layout.
Top parts: luminaire, bracket arm and top cap
First, the top zone carries the light. Also, it is the zone where buyers most often mix up what is included in the price. For that reason, check each part below against your quote.
Luminaire
This is the light fitting that holds the LED module or lamp. It is a separate item from the pole, so check whether your quote covers the pole only or the pole with the luminaire.
Bracket arm
The arm carries the luminaire out over the road. Its length and tilt come from the drawing, so confirm both before you order.
Top cap or spigot
Some poles, such as many garden and decorative designs, hold the fitting straight on top instead of on an arm.
If you plan a park or a campus, compare the top zone on our garden lighting pole range. For roads and modern projects, look at the modern LED lighting pole range as well.
Shaft parts: tube, door opening, cable entry and earth stud
First, the shaft is the long tube that carries everything above the ground. Some poles use a straight tube, while others taper, so ask which one your design uses. Then look at Drawing 2, which shows the difference.
- 1Shaft wall (a tube, rolled or formed to the design)
- 2Door opening above the base, for the junction box
- 3Base plate, welded to the bottom of the shaft
Door opening and cable entry
First, the door opening gives access to the junction box. Meanwhile, the cable entry is where the supply cable comes in at the base. Our street light pole junction box guide explains what goes behind the door and what to check before installation.
Earth stud
The earth stud is a small fixing point for the earth connection, so that the pole body can be bonded safely. Therefore, ask your supplier where it sits and how the pole body connects to it.
Base parts: base plate, anchor bolts, nuts and washers
Overall, the base zone holds the pole upright. First, the base plate sits under the shaft. Then the anchor bolts pass through its holes into the foundation. Finally, nuts and washers lock the plate down.
- 1Base plate (flat steel plate under the shaft)
- 2Anchor bolt holes (shown yellow in the top view)
- 3Shaft, welded to the plate
- 4Gusset ribs (small triangular plates, if the design uses them)
- 5Nuts and washers on the anchor bolts
Reading the base drawing
First, the base plate works like a flange: a flat projecting plate that lets a tube bolt on to a support. Also, gusset ribs, if the design uses them, are small triangular plates. In addition, the gusset plate article on Wikipedia explains the general idea.
Next, every anchor bolt carries a nut and a washer. Here, the washer spreads the load, while the nut locks the plate down. Therefore, ask how many of each come with the pole.
Finally, the foundation is the concrete block below the ground line. Moreover, our foundation design and drawing guide shows how the bolts, the plate and the cable duct fit together.
Street light pole parts name quick reference table
Use Table 1 as your street light pole parts name checklist. Then ask your supplier to confirm each row in writing. Also compare the answers across quotes, because the same part may appear under a different name.
| Part (number from Drawing 1) | Also called | What it does | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Luminaire | Light fitting | Holds the LED module or lamp | Is it included in the price? |
| 2 Bracket arm | Outreach arm, bracket | Carries the luminaire over the road | Arm length and tilt on the drawing |
| 3 Shaft | Tube, stem, column | Carries the arm and the luminaire | Straight or tapered, and the finish |
| 4 Door and window | Access door, cut-out | Gives access to the junction box | Opening size and height |
| 5 Earth stud | Earthing point | Bonds the pole body for safety | Where it sits on the shaft |
| 6 Base plate | Foot plate, flange | Fixes the shaft to the foundation | Plate size and ribs, if any, on the drawing |
| 7 Anchor bolts | Foundation bolts | Hold the base plate down | Bolt count, nuts and washers included? |
| 8 Foundation | Pedestal, concrete base | Carries the whole pole | Duct position and design from your engineer |

How the parts of a street light pole work together
The parts work as two paths. First, the load path carries weight and wind down from the luminaire to the foundation. Next, the cable path carries power up from the supply to the luminaire. Drawing 4 shows both side by side, so compare them.
Five checks before you order
- First, match every part in your quote to a row in Table 1, the street light pole parts name reference.
- Next, ask which parts are included and which you buy separately.
- Then confirm the door, the cable entry and the earth stud on the drawing.
- After that, check the base plate and the bolts against your engineer's design.
- Finally, ask for all answers in writing.
Because every part wears at its own rate, add each part to your yearly visit using our lighting pole maintenance checklist. Meanwhile, the street light pole design guide explains how the design choices fit together.

Street light pole parts name: common questions
What are the main parts of a street light pole?
First, the street light pole parts name list covers a luminaire, a bracket arm, a shaft, a door opening, an earth stud, a base plate, anchor bolts with nuts and washers, and a foundation. Also, Table 1 lists each one with its other names.
What is the top part of a street light pole called?
First, the light fitting is the luminaire. Then it is carried on a bracket arm, which some suppliers call an outreach arm. On some garden poles it sits on a top cap instead.
What is the bottom plate of a street light pole called?
It is the base plate, also called a foot plate or flange. Then it is welded to the shaft, and the anchor bolts pass through its holes into the foundation.
What is the door in a street light pole for?
It gives access to the junction box. As a result, an electrician can work on the joints from ground level instead of climbing.
What are anchor bolts on a street light pole?
First, they are the bolts set in the foundation that hold the base plate down. Also, each one carries a nut and a washer, and your engineer decides their size and count.
Why do street light pole part names differ between quotes?
Suppliers use different words for the same part. For example, bracket and outreach arm mean the same thing. Therefore, use Table 1 to match them.
What should I send for a street light pole parts quotation?
First, send the pole height, the pole type, the arm type, the quantity and your drawing. Then the builder in section 8 collects these points in one message.
Ready to plan your poles?
When you are ready, send your drawing, your quantity and the street light pole parts name list from this guide. Our team in Bhopal will then reply in writing.
