Street Light Pole Price in India: what really decides the quote

Ask five suppliers for a street light pole price and you may get five very different numbers. Often all five are right, because each one priced a different pole. This guide shows what moves the price, why we do not print one rate, and how to ask so your quotes can be compared fairly.

Why there is no single street light pole price

“Street light pole” is a family, not one product. On our own street light pole page the series are listed from 3 m to 12 m, in conical, octagonal or round shapes, with single-arm, double-arm or custom arm layouts, in mild steel or galvanised steel, with optional powder coating. Any one price belongs to one combination of those choices, not to the name.

That is why you will not find a rate card in this article. Steel costs move, projects differ, and a number printed in a blog would be out of date before you finished reading it. A wrong number would also mislead you into comparing the wrong things. What we can do honestly is show you what builds the price, so you can judge any quote you receive, ours included.

A price without a specification is only a guess.

Think of the quote as a stack. The steel sits at the bottom and is bought by weight. Above it come the making of the pole, the finish, the arm and base fittings, the freight and finally the tax. A change in any layer changes the total, and two suppliers can differ in several layers at once without either being dishonest.

To see what we build before you ask for a price, start with the street light pole range. For a wider view of how to judge a supplier, our guide on choosing a street light pole manufacturer in India covers road types, fabrication, finish and paperwork.

The seven things that move the price

When a supplier says “it depends”, these are the seven things it depends on. Settle them before you ask and your quotes will line up.

1

Height

A taller pole needs more steel, a bigger base and more care in transport and erection. Price rises faster than the metres do.

2

Diameter and wall thickness

These set the weight, and weight is the biggest single cost. A thin wall is cheaper and also weaker.

3

Shape

Conical, octagonal and round poles are made differently, so the work and the tooling differ.

4

Arms and brackets

One arm, two arms or a custom arrangement change the steel, the welding and the load at the top.

5

Finish

Hot-dip galvanising, powder coating or paint each add a different cost and give a different life.

6

Base plate and extras

Base plate, anchor bolts, access door and cable entry are often priced separately.

7

Quantity and delivery

Order size, delivery city and packing change the cost of each pole delivered to site.

Notice what is not on the list: the brand name and the colour of the brochure. Our street light pole page says the same thing in its FAQ, that you should not choose a pole by price or appearance alone, and that the LED fixture, arm layout and site conditions come first.

If your project uses a modern LED fixture, check its weight and mounting before you fix the arm. Heavier luminaires change the load at the top, and our modern LED lighting poles page is a good place to see how fixtures and poles are matched.

Height: what changes between 6 m and 12 m

Height is the first thing every supplier asks, and for good reason. A 12 m pole is not simply twice a 6 m pole. It carries its load at a greater distance from the ground, so the base has to resist more bending, the sections must be stronger and the pole is harder to move and raise.

Three poles of 6 m, 9 m and 12 m drawn to a common scale6 m9 m12 m

Drawn to one scale to show the height difference. Real poles taper and have base plates.

Height bandWhy the price steps upWhat to confirm in the quote
Up to 6 mLess steel and a smaller base. Often the simplest to move and raise.Wall thickness, base plate size and arm length.
7 m to 9 mMore steel and a larger base. Wind load on the fixture matters more.Diameter at the base and top, and the weight per pole.
10 m to 12 mMuch more steel, longer transport and heavier erection equipment.Whether the pole comes in sections, how they join and the foundation needed.

A taller pole also needs a deeper foundation, and the foundation design should come from your engineer, not from a guess. Ask who will supply the foundation drawing and whether it is in the price, so the civil cost does not arrive as a surprise after the order.

For taller poles, swaged and stepped sections are common, and we explain how straight, tapered and swaged forms differ in our tubular pole manufacturer guide. Ask the supplier which form the quote is for, because it changes both weight and price.

Weight and wall thickness: the hidden driver

Steel is bought and sold by weight, so the weight of the finished pole is the best single guide to its price. Two poles of the same height can weigh very different amounts, and the price follows the weight, not the height.

You can see this in a published standard table. In the 410 SP table in our guide, every pole from 410 SP 25 to 410 SP 32 has the same overall length of 9 m and the same 7.5 m above ground. Their weights run from 78 kg to 154 kg, nearly double, because the diameters and wall thicknesses differ.

Weights of eight 9 m swaged poles from 78 kg to 154 kg410 SP 25410 SP 26410 SP 27410 SP 28410 SP 29410 SP 30410 SP 31410 SP 3278 kg92 kg108 kg113 kg125 kg133 kg147 kg154 kg

Same 9 m length, different wall and diameter. Weights as listed in the 410 SP table of our guide.

The lesson is simple. A quote that does not state the weight per pole, the outside diameters and the wall thickness is a quote you cannot compare. A cheaper price on a lighter pole is not a bargain, it is a different pole. Read how the columns of such a table work in our 410 SP tubular pole table guide, then ask your supplier for the same details for the pole you are buying.

Our street light pole page says final thickness and construction depend on the application, which is the honest answer. The right wall thickness comes from the height, the fixture load and the wind at your site, and your designer should confirm it.

Finish: galvanised, powder coated or painted

The finish is where a cheap quote often hides its saving. A thick, even zinc coating costs more to apply than a thin one, and a powder coat on top costs more again, yet both change how long the pole lasts before it needs work.

The site states that our poles undergo hot-dip galvanising for protection against rust and moisture, that powder coating is optional for extra durability and appearance, and that coating thickness is one of the checks made before dispatch. When you compare offers, ask each supplier what they will deliver, in writing:

A

Which finish

Hot-dip galvanised, powder coated over galvanising, or painted only. They are not the same.

B

What thickness

Ask for the coating thickness to be stated and checked, not described as “standard”.

C

Which surfaces

Ask whether the inside, the weld areas and the base are covered as well as the outside.

If you are unsure how paint and zinc protect steel in different ways, our MS vs GI lighting pole comparison sets the two side by side. The short version for pricing is that a pole with a weaker finish may cost less today and cost more over its life.

What is included and what is extra

Many price surprises are not about the pole at all. They come from items that one quote includes and another leaves out. Go through this table with each supplier and tick every line.

ItemWhat to askOften missed
Base plate and anchor boltsAre they in the price, and to which size and drawing?Bolts priced separately or left to the buyer.
Arms and bracketsHow many, what length, and which fixture do they suit? The bracket for the luminaire itself.
Access door and cable entryDoes the pole need them, and are they included?A cut-out added later as an extra.
Packing and loadingWho packs, who loads and how are poles protected?Damage to the finish in transport.
Freight and unloadingIs delivery to your site included, and who unloads?Unloading equipment at site.
GSTIs the quoted price with or without tax, and at what rate?A price shown without tax beside one with it.
Foundation and erectionIs civil work or installation part of the offer?Assuming it is, when it is not.

On tax, India’s Goods and Services Tax is charged at each stage of supply and the rate depends on how the goods are classified, so ask each supplier to state the rate and the amount on the quote. Check the classification with your accountant, because we do not quote a rate here.

The same discipline applies to delivery. Our street light pole page says we offer quotations, project coordination and delivery across India, so tell us the delivery city at the start and the freight can be shown clearly. A quick rule helps here: if a line is missing from a quote, assume it is not included until the supplier confirms it in writing.

The cheapest quote versus the cost over its life

A street light pole may stand for many years. Over that time you pay for more than the purchase. Planners call the whole sum the total cost of ownership, which covers buying the item, running and maintaining it, and replacing or disposing of it at the end.

Apply that idea to poles. A lighter wall, a thinner coating or a weak weld may save money on day one. If it leads to early rust, repainting, a leaning pole or a replacement, the saving is gone and the cost of the crane, the traffic control and the dark road has been added.

Compare price per year of service, not price per pole.

You cannot know the life of a pole from its price, but you can improve the odds. Ask for the weight, the wall thickness, the finish and the coating thickness in writing. Ask what checks are done before dispatch. Our site lists dimensional accuracy, weld strength, coating thickness and load among them, and a supplier who cannot say what they check has told you something.

Care after installation matters as much as the purchase. A pole that is inspected and touched up lasts longer than one that is ignored, and our lighting pole maintenance checklist shows what to look at and when. Budget for that upkeep when you compare offers, not after you install.

How to ask for a price and compare the quotes

A good enquiry is the cheapest way to a fair price. Public buyers use a formal request for quotation for this reason: it gives every supplier the same specification, so the answers can be compared line by line. You do not need a formal tender, but the idea works for any order.

If your project has a schedule of items, send it. A bill of quantities lists every item and quantity so each bidder prices the same work, and our site says customers can share drawings, BOQs and pole schedules for a quote. Use the builder below to write your own enquiry in a minute, then copy it into the contact form or a message.

Paste this into our contact page and add your name and phone number. We will confirm what we can supply and reply in writing.

When the quotes come back, lay them side by side and compare the same lines. Do not compare the totals until every line matches.

If one line is blank on a quote, ask for it before you decide. The supplier who answers clearly is usually the one who knows the pole.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fixed street light pole price in India?

No. The price depends on height, weight, shape, arms, finish, quantity and delivery. A rate per pole means little unless it comes with a specification.

Why do two suppliers quote very different prices?

They are often pricing different poles. Differences in wall thickness, weight, finish and included fittings change the price a great deal, so compare the specification before the total.

Does a taller pole always cost proportionally more?

No. It usually costs more than proportionally, because taller poles need more steel, a stronger base and heavier transport and erection.

Is a galvanised pole always dearer than a painted one?

The finish is one of several layers in the price. Galvanising and powder coating add cost, yet they often reduce repainting and early replacement, so look at cost over the life of the pole.

Does ordering more poles lower the price per pole?

Quantity can affect the cost per pole, especially for freight and packing. Tell the supplier your full quantity and any phases at the start.

What should I send to get an accurate quote?

Send the height, shape, number of arms, finish, quantity, delivery location and fixture details. Drawings, a BOQ or a pole schedule help even more, and the builder above writes most of this for you.

Are GST and freight included in a quoted price?

Not always. Ask each supplier to show freight and GST as separate lines, with the rate stated, so that every quote can be compared on the same basis.
